“One of the most important artists of our time — painting is in her heart and in her blood.”  Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director, Serpentine Galleries

South African Visual Artist | Cultural Ambassador | EXCLUSIVELY represented worldwide by AOCA and The Melrose Gallery

Dr Esther Nostokana Nagiyana Nikwambi Mahlangu (b. 1935) is an iconic South African visual artist and beloved cultural ambassador. Internationally celebrated for her bold, geometric Ndebele-inspired artworks, she has elevated traditional visual language into a universal symbol of unity and artistic brilliance. Her works form part of the world’s most important collections, and her visionary career continues to bridge cultural heritage with contemporary global innovation.

She was a disruptor from an early age, becoming the first person to reimagine Ndebele design that is tradionally used for decorating houses on contemporary mediums.

Dr Mahlangu has spent more than 7 decades practising her artform and has travelled extensively to collaborate with the world's most respected museums, galleries, curators, art fairs, celebrities and global brands.

In 1991 she became the first woman and first African to participate in the BMW Art Car Collection alongside other notables of the likes of Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein and Frank Stella.

Serpentine Unveils Large-Scale Mural by Esther Mahlangu

4 October 2024 - Umuntu ngumuntu ngabuntu, a monumental, site-specific mural by South African artist Dr Esther Mahlangu — her first public artwork in the UK. Painted across sixteen wooden panels in the garden at Serpentine North, the vibrant composition celebrates unity and community.

Supported by BMW, The Melrose Gallery, and The Milstein Family, the project marks a moment of pride for South Africa and the African continent.

Serpentine Artistic Director Hans Ulrich Obrist said: “Esther Mahlangu is one of the most important artists of our time who continues to inspire emerging talents… today, the dream of a Serpentine mural has come true.”

In February 2024, the landmark retrospective Then I Knew I Was Good at Painting: Esther Mahlangu, A Retrospective opened at the Iziko South African National Gallery, honouring Dr. Mahlangu’s extraordinary eight-decade career.

Curated by Nontobeko Ntombela, the exhibition brought together an unparalleled collection of works, tracing Dr. Mahlangu’s journey from her early days painting on traditional Ndebele homesteads to her global recognition as one of South Africa’s most celebrated contemporary artists.

Following its debut in Cape Town, the retrospective travelled to the Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg, where it was on view until April 2025.
